#SPICon 2019: Know Before You Go

PART 2: OUT ON THE TOWN

Our Salt Lake City office is back with more tips and facts to prepare you for your trip to Utah in September for Solar Power International 2019. In this post, Joey Marquart, senior vice president, is tackling everything you need to know before you touch down from restaurants to alcohol and more!Fast Facts for Exploring Salt Lake City

  • ALCOHOL– No need to worry about it. Utah had some extremely strict alcohol laws, but that has changed. Beer is 4% alcohol (up from 3.2) and anyone 21 and older can order a drink in a bar – no food required. The majority of restaurants also offer alcohol (but food is always required).
  • DINING– Utah is famous for its cream soup-laded “funeral potatoes,” but the dining sceneis refined and diverse. For some local favorites try Eva’s and Whiskey Street.
  • SUNDAYS– If you arrive the weekend prior, know that downtown Salt Lake City is quiet on Sundays. You’ll find only a handful of restaurants, drug stores and grocery stores open. The city has more open businesses outside of downtown.

And, here are a few fun facts that you can throw out while you’re networking:

  • Due to its short distance to the Great Salt Lake, the city was originally named "Great Salt Lake City." The word "great" was dropped from the official name in 1868.
  • Salt Lake City is home to the first Kentucky Fried Chicken! In 1952, Sanders franchised his chicken recipe to his Utah-based friend Pete Harman. Harman changed his own restaurant's name from Harman Café to Kentucky Fried Chicken after people lined up down the street to order his new Southern-fried menu item. The original KFC still stands at the corner of 3900 South and State Street—about 1500 miles away from Kentucky.
  • Salt Lake City is the only U.S. capital with three words in its name!
