Top Reporters Writing About Data Centers

As data center facilities increase exponentially across the United States, so does the attendant media coverage and reporters incorporating data center power issues into their beats. As Silverline explores in its report, “Powering AI Data Centers,” coverage of data center power demand issues has nearly tripled between the first half of 2023 and the first half of 2024.

Types of publications covering the topic of data centers have changed between the two time frames. In the first half of 2023, the top publications that covered the topic included the Associated Press, Oregon Live, InvestigateWest, and Prince William Times. While indicating good coverage, these outlets are primarily made up of local media and newswires. Top reporters in 1H23 were:

  • Matthew Barakat, U.S. & Regional Reporter, Associated Press (Northern Virginia)

  • Mike Rogoway, Business/Finance & Technology Reporter, Oregon Live

  • Kaylee Tornay, U.S. & Regional Reporter, InvestigateWest (nonprofit investigative publication) (Western U.S.)

  • Jim Gazzolo, Freelance (regional publications in the U.S. southeast such as the Charlotte Observer, Miami Herald)

  • Jill Palermo, U.S. Regional Reporter, Prince William Times (Northern Virginia)

In the first half of 2024 while coverage volume increased, the media outlet type shifted to indicate a higher amount of top-tier media interest in data centers. The outlets that published the most articles about data centers in the first half of 2024 included Reuters, Bloomberg Technology, CNBC, the Seattle Times, and Stateline. Top publishing reporters in 1H24 were:

  • Laila Kearney, Energy Correspondent, Reuters (New York)

  • Matt Day, Business/Finance & Technology Reporter, Bloomberg Technology (Seattle)

  • Spencer Kimball, Energy Reporter, CNBC (New York)

  • Jon Talton, Business Columnist, Seattle Times

  • Kevin Hardy, Business/Finance, Regional Reporter, Stateline (Kansas City)

Media coverage and reporter interest and beats are ever evolving, and this data represents just a fraction of reporter interest in data centers and where that is showing up in the media. To read more about data center power demand media trends, click here
